Because they are so simple and inexpensive to produce, most industries choose to develop new plastics rather than recycle what we currently have. Unfortunately, this has resulted in some rather dire numbers for the globe. Only around 8% of plastics are recycled even once globally. 

It takes 1,000 years for a water bottle to decompose in a landfill. It takes 7 days to turn one into a wristband.
